Introduction

This Grommet Dies and Tooling guide explains how MICRON® die sets deliver clean cuts, smooth turnover, and consistent setting. Every MICRON® die is manufactured in Europe and engineered for accuracy, repeatability, and long service life. In addition, MICRON® dies include an internal spring system and are made from non-magnetic hardened steel for smooth operation and durability.

As a result, MICRON® dies perform reliably on many materials—from thin polyester fabrics to thick canvas, denim, and even metal signage.

Self-Piercing Grommet Dies — One-Step Perfection

Self-piercing grommets cut and set in a single motion. The die itself performs the cutting, eliminating the need for pre-punching. When used on polyester webbing or woven fabrics, the clean cut ensures a perfect grommet neck turnover and a professional finish without fraying.

Hole-Piercing Dies — For a Cleaner Finish

For the highest precision on dense fabrics or webbing, professionals often prefer to punch the hole first using a hole-piercing die, then set the grommet. This method produces a smoother neck roll and flawless turnover.

Tip: Pre-punching is especially recommended for polyester, PVC-coated fabric, or thick woven materials where a clean edge is critical.

Sheet-Metal, Rolled-Rim & Curtain Grommet Dies

These grommets do not cut material by themselves. Therefore, the fabric or substrate must be pre-cut with a hole-piercing die or separate cutter before setting the grommet and washer. To save time and eliminate repositioning, MICRON® offers Two-Step Industrial Dies.

Two-Step Industrial Die System

  1. Place the washer on the lower die and lay the fabric over it.
    2. Step 1: Punch the hole.
    3. Without moving the fabric, position the grommet on the die.
    4. Step 2: Set the grommet. This two-in-one design keeps alignment perfect and speeds up production.

One-Shot Hydraulic & Automatic Systems

For high-volume factories, MICRON®’s MH-5 Hydraulic and M-500 Fully Automatic machines perform cutting and setting in one stroke. The MH-5 is a hand-feed hydraulic press, ideal for larger curtain grommets and other heavy-duty applications. The M-500, on the other hand, automatically feeds grommets and washers through an integrated hopper and channeling system, maximizing productivity and ensuring consistent alignment. This system is perfect for tarps, tents, curtains, banners, and industrial fabrics.

Metal & Signage Applications

Some customers work with aluminum panels, metal signs, or composite sheets. The MC-20 Double Cylinder Pneumatic Machine provides sufficient power to pierce metal and immediately set the grommet with precision and control.

Typical Uses: outdoor signage, information panels, nameplates, and metal-backed banners.

Jean Button & Rivet Dies

Jean Buttons
MICRON® jean button dies feature ridged pins that pierce the fabric themselves — no pre-punching required. The pin creates the hole and clinches securely in one press stroke.

Jean Rivets
Likewise, single-cap, double-cap, ring, or nipple-type rivets have sharp pin ends that allow one-step installation without cutting the fabric first.

Tubular Rapid Rivets & Spring Snaps

Tubular Rapid Rivets and Spring Snaps have rounded pins, so the fabric should be pre-punched for accuracy. First create the hole, then set the rivet or snap using the appropriate die. This prevents distortion and guarantees a perfect fit.

Bebeto Prong Snaps, Plastic Snaps & Ring Snaps

Bebeto Prong Snaps, Plastic Snaps, and Ring Snaps all feature self-piercing prongs, which eliminate the need for pre-punching. They can be directly applied to fabric or leather, providing a strong and decorative fastening option for garments, accessories, and upholstery.

Oblong Grommet Dies

Oblong grommets require pre-cut holes for precise alignment. Use an oblong hole-cutting die first, then set the grommet and washer for a secure fit. For one-shot installation, the MH-5 Hydraulic Machine performs both actions in a single motion — ideal for production of truck covers, tarps, awnings, and marine canvas.

Button Covering Dies & Machines

For small shops and sample rooms, the MD-1 Manual Button Covering & Fabric Circle Cutter is ideal. It allows operators to punch the fabric perfectly, then cover the button using the same unit.

For high-volume upholstery or textile manufacturing, MICRON® recommends the MPBC-300 Dual-Head Pneumatic Button Cover Machine. One operator can continuously cut the fabric, while another simultaneously covers the buttons, doubling production efficiency.

Summary

Each MICRON® die is precisely engineered to match its grommet or fastener category. Internal springs prevent jamming, non-magnetic steel ensures stability, and European craftsmanship guarantees reliability.

From self-piercing to two-step and hydraulic systems, MICRON® provides a complete tooling solution for every application — delivering the perfect turnover, alignment, and finish every time.
